Gymnos in habitat

Gymnocalycium saglionis (Cels) Britton & Rose

G. saglionis is widely spread throughout our collections. The plants often grow to a respectable size and become particularly attractive along the way. A sunny spot in the greenhouse and a well permeable, mineral-based substrate are ideal premises for these fascinating plants. Their habitat in Argentina stretches across the provinces of Salta, Tucaman, Catamarca, La Rioja and San Juan. Populations with exceptionally large specimen can be found in the province of La Rioja. The bigger plants can be easily identified in fields. Smaller specimen often resemble G. pflanzii subsp. argentinense, although their flowers are a good criterion to distinguish both species.
